Understanding Home Care Services Provided by a Companions and Homemakers
In order to provide home care services, homemakers/ companions referred by Accountable Home Care are licensed in the State of Florida as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or a Home Health Aide (HHA). As a licensed nurse registry, we are required to keep credentials on file for each licensed caregiver including their training received. Companion care ensures that someone is checking in on an aging parent and during the time the caregiver is working, the home is in a safe environment. Some of the areas include but not limited to human development and interpersonal relationships, nutrition, shopping, food storage, use of equipment and supplies, planning and organizing of household tasks and principles of cleanliness and safety.
Companion Care Primary Responsibilities of Companions/Homemakers including but not limited to:
- Maintaining the home in the optimum state of cleanliness and safety depending upon the patient’s and the caregiver’s resources.
- Perform the functions generally undertaken by the natural homemaker, including duties such as preparation of meals, laundry, and shopping.
- Performs casual, cosmetic assistance, such as brushing the patient’s hair, assisting with make-up, filing and polishing nails (with the exception of clipping nails for diabetic patients).
- Stabilizes the patient when walking, as needed, by holding the patient’s arm or hand.
- Report any unusual incidents or changes in the patient’s or patient’s behavior.
- Provides companionship for the patient.
Provides escort services such as taking the patient to the doctor. If arranged and discussed, errands and transportation may be included for grocery and clothes shopping, picking up prescriptions, driving to the beauty parlor or barber shop, going to the gym, dining out for lunch or dinner, driving to family outings, handling dry cleaning, buying stamps and mailing packages and attending church services.

When using a Long Term Care Policy as payment for hourly care at home, what services are considered long-term care services?
Long Term Care Benefit
Often times families and clients requests the use of their long term care policy as an acceptable payor source when retaining our services for hourly care at home. At Accountable Home Care, we are proud to accept the benefits and work directly with insurance if it is easier for the client and the family.
When using a long term care policy, care services tend to relate to the following covered care services:
*It is very important to verify directly with the long term insurance provider and utilize your original long term care policy for further clarification and guidelines.
- Attending an Adult Day Care Center offering respite services. This allows for a family to seek a comfortable and safe environment outside the patient's home. Adult day care is a great option for senior citizens who may benefit from socialization. Typically the primary caregiver is an adult child that works and the aging parent no longer can be left home alone while the adult child works.
- Home Health Care - Skilled Registered Nursing Visits and/or home physical therapy services. Hospice at home is another form of home health care but can also be at an actual inpatient center.
- Assisted Living Facility resident or a resident of a Long Term Care Nursing Home.
Am I able to get a caregiver just to help me bath?
Yes, we have a number of licensed caregivers able to provide clients with a one hour bath visit. Whether a client is in need of a bath for soaking or a shower, families and client's alike can feel good knowing personal hygiene has been attended to. For some clients that may be hesitate in starting care, a bath visit can be a great way to give home care a try.
